Doctrine of Christ

The Rev. Dr. (ABD) Brittain Brewer

Master of Divinity Program Course
2 credits | March 25-June 8, 2024 | Mondays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (PST)

An examination of the doctrine of Christ in Scripture, the history of redemption, the Church, and the Christian life. Attention given to the doctrine of Christ in the Reformed tradition and other Christian perspectives today. The class approaches the doctrine of Christ exegetically, theologically, and historically, addressing specific challenges to an orthodox and Reformed Christology. Roughly two-thirds of each class is devoted to lecture, while the final third is spent discussing the primary text(s) assigned for the day with the aid of student seminar papers.

Instructor: The Rev. Dr. (ABD) Brittain Brewer is Associate Pastor at the Reformation Covenant Church in Oregon City, OR. He is completing his Ph.D. in New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary in Michigan. He holds an M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary, North Carolina. He teaches Greek, New Testament & Systematics courses at the Seminary.

Gospels and Acts

The Rev. Dr. Sebastian Smolarz

Master of Divinity Program Course
2 credits | April 6-June 8, 2024 | Select Saturdays,* 8 a.m.-1 p.m. (PST)

An introduction to the four Gospels, especially the Synoptic Gospels, and the book of Acts. Attention is given to the life and message of Jesus, the early church, the Gospel’s Jewish and Roman contexts, their shared and distinctive theological emphases, pastoral purposes, and ecclesiastical and eschatological perspectives. This course meets in four intensive sessions:

May 4: 5 hours
May 18: 5 hours

Instructor: The Rev. Dr. Sebastian Smolarz is the pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Wroclaw, Poland. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Wales, UK. He teaches other courses the Seminary’s Biblical Studies area.

Global Missions

A Roundtable Discussion with Missionaries
Church Enrichment Course

Dr. Roy Alden Atwood, Facilitator
Non-credit | April 4-June 1, 2024 (revised dates), Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m. PST; select Saturdays, 9-10 a.m. PST

This non-credit enrichment course is a roundtable discussion with current and former Christian missionaries about the work and challenges of missions around the world. It is intended for church leaders and congregants interested in global missions. The roundtable addresses the biblical and theological foundations of missions, historical and contemporary challenges, and the best practices for local congregations involved with missions. The discussions will touch on how churches can improve what they do in sponsoring and sending missionaries abroad.

To participate in the Global Missions enrichment course,

either purchase a Listener’s Pass from the Registrar’s Office (the pass is $50; a $250 group rate for five+ listeners)
or members of an RES Church Partner congregation should contact their pastor or a church staff member to receive their free Listener’s Pass.

Facilitator: Dr. Roy Alden Atwood is the President of Reformed Evangelical Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Iowa and an M.A. in Religion from Westminster Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania. He has taught at universities and churches in Poland, Kenya, South Africa, South Korea, China, and Albania.

Missionaries: The missionaries participating in the roundtable discussions have extensive experience serving Christ and His global Church in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the South Pacific, Latin America, and Europe. They are or have been affiliated with a variety of mission-sending agencies and denominations, as well as indigenous Christian churches.

Greek II

2 credits | Jan. 3- March 16, 2024 | Mondays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. PST

This course is a continuation of Greek I, which introduces students to the basics of Koine Greek in grammar, syntax, and morphology, along with the background of the Greek New Testament, to provide a foundation for reading and exegeting the Greek New Testament for ministry.

Theology of Worship

Master of Divinity Program Course
2 credits | Jan. 3- March 16, 2024 | Thursdays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. PST

This course will examine the Biblical theology of Christian liturgical worship & the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We will explore the biblical foundations for liturgical worship, especially the “sacrificial” sequence and order of worship. The course will also address the liturgy as pastoral care, the cultural significance of liturgical Christian worship, and the problems associated with modern “contemporary” worship. Students will discover resources available in the Christian tradition for renewing Christian worship today.

The Eldership & Church Sessions

Church Enrichment Course
1 credit | Jan 2 - March 16, 2024, Tuesdays, 6-7 p.m. PST

This course/seminar meets for one hour every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. (Pacific)/8 p.m. (Central) via Zoom for 10 weeks, beginning January 2, 2024. It will be led by three instructors: Pastor Randy Booth, Pastor Dave Hatcher, and Pastor Rob Hadding. Each topic will be presented, followed by interaction between the instructors and an opportunity for students to submit questions. Matriculating students will have a final exam. There may be some light reading assignments prior to a class, and a suggested reading list is provided for further study.
